Eritrea will push to reduce its isolation

Eritrea political update.


Eritrean opportunities to break out of self-imposed isolation and Ethiopian-led containment have been bolstered by regional dynamics such as migration and Yemen’s conflict.


  • A more pragmatic foreign policy will not necessarily lead to better relations with Eritrea's immediate neighbours.
  • Re-engagement will further encourage foreign investment in extractives and port development, as well as review of the UN sanctions regime.
  • The autocracy will resist reforms necessary for the benefits of any economic improvements and engagement to reach the population.
