India’s upper house of parliament on April 6 passed four supportive bills related to the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Emboldened by this, the government is aiming to roll out the GST on July 1.


  • Petroleum products are unlikely to be included in the GST any time soon.
  • India will increase its reliance on indirect rather than direct taxation.
  • Disputes over the GST regime could get tangled in long court battles.
