Outlook for US sanctions on Russia.


US and EU sanctions against Russia, introduced after the invasion of Crimea in early 2014, face an uncertain future. President Donald Trump has expressed an interest in reorienting relations with Russia; this includes exploring an end to some sanctions.


  • The outcome of the Trump administration's early outreach efforts will set the trajectory for its overall Russia policy.
  • US moves to undermine the sanctions regime would probably weaken EU forces in favour of maintaining equivalent sanctions.
  • The election of French presidential candidate Francois Fillon would provide a strong anti-sanctions voice in the EU's core.
