Static illicit drug use calls for new global strategy

Tuesday, April 7, 2015

Subject

The level of drug use globally and its impacts.

Significance

According to the 2014 World Drug Report from the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), over 240 million people (exceeding 5% of the world's adult population) had taken an illegal drug at least once in the previous year. The global industry that supports this practice is both wealthy and connected with a range of other dangerous actors and activities.

Impacts

  • The failure of the 'Global War on Drugs' is an expensive challenge to addressing a domestic social problem through international operations.
  • The estimate of over 500 billion dollars generated by the narcotics industry fuels numerous other criminal activities.
  • It also undermines efforts to cleanse the global financial system.
