US realignment in Europe will not risk Ukraine support
Monday, February 16, 2015
Significance
The United States announced in January the closure of 15 military bases and other rebalancing of forces in Europe. However, the base closures do not entail further drawing down of US forces in Europe, despite such planned reductions just a few years ago.
Impacts
- Growth in domestic economies may have more impact on European forces than US realignments.
- US expenditures will not offset declining European defence budgets.
- European countries will begin to question F-35 commitments if costs continue to escalate.
