One of the pleasures of being a journal editor is being presented with interesting and innovative suggestions for special issues. Sometimes these arise from conferences (and there are two such special issues scheduled for later this year); at other times they come from a separate call for papers initiated by guest editors. This special issue is an example of the latter type – the guest editors, Sonja Sibila Lebe and Matjaž Mulej, came to us with their plans for a special issue, crafted a call for papers and attracted a large number of completely new articles.

As Sonja and Matjaz discuss at greater length in their own editorial, tourism is an extremely important part of the economy of many nations, and it also has significant environmental, social and political implications (both positive and negative). This is the first time that the topic has been addressed so comprehensively.

We are extremely grateful to Sonja Sibila Lebe and Matjaž Mulej for their very hard work on the special issue – in finding a body of authors to submit papers, in putting together a comprehensive review team, and in leading a very thorough and rigorous review process. We are also grateful to the many reviewers for their expert contribution in enhancing the papers, and to the authors for the quality of their work. The issue does credit to all of them.

We hope you enjoy this special double issue of Kybernetes.
