Special issue on 50 years of tribology – sustainable manufacturing

The term tribology was first coined in 1966 as documented in “Jost Report”. The word “tribology” has since then gained a common usage for matters related to friction, wear and lubrication in machine interactions. As tribology is an engineering issue that goes beyond national boundaries, many tribology societies have emerged across the continents partly motivated by the pursuit of a greener world via waste reduction. Thus, in conjunction with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of tribology, this special issue aims at informing colleagues in the industry and academia about the recent tribology advances and challenges in selecting materials, processes and cost-reducing techniques for sustainable manufacturing. The papers included here will discuss about the methods, analysis, design advances and new materials concerning all kinds of sustainable manufacturing and development with improved tribological properties from fundamental research to applied uses, with the resulting benefits of longer product/component life, less energy consumption and reduction in product development time and cost.

Renowned authors in the area of tribology, including excellent works presented at the International Conference on Advanced Processes and Systems in Manufacturing (APSIM 2016) were invited to submit their contributions to this special issue.

As a guest editor, I hope that the papers in this special issue will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and tribologists around the globe. I also would like to thank the Chief Editor of Industrial Lubrication and Tribology and reviewers, who worked very hard in reviewing papers and providing feedback to the authors.

About the author

Mohd Fadzli Bin Abdollah is an Associate Professor and Deputy Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies) at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). He received his BEng (Hons) and MEng in mechanical engineering from Universiti Kebangsaan, Malaysia, in 2004 and 2005, respectively. Later in 2011, he completed his DrEng in mechanical science and engineering from Nagoya University, Japan. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 journal and conference papers, and obtained three intellectual properties. His current research interests involve tribology of eco-materials and surface engineering. He has served the tribology community in various capacities including, Editor-in-Chief for Jurnal Tribologi for Jurnal Tribologi and appointed as Guest Editor for several journals, including Industrial Lubrication and Tribology, Journal of Materials Research, Transactions of the IMF, Tribology – Materials, Surfaces & Interfaces, Composite Interfaces and International Journal of Materials and Product Technology.
