Abstract

Elaborates on smart designs in the automobile industry (spotlighting, in a panel, the Mercedes‐Benz Smart Car in detail) in many companies and across the world — such as: Brazil's Volkswagen factory; Mlada Boleslav (Prague) in the Czech Republic for Skoda; Melfi, Italy for Fiat, plus other proposed developments for Ford, etc. Concludes that the more you break boundaries down — the less secure you may become! Sums up that lean production techniques, pioneered by Toyota, are the antithesis of mass production and this has forced giant car manufacturers to have a major rethink.
