Abstract

Examines “Robosorter”, a high‐speed computer‐controlled machine designed to sort food into multiple grades, including a reject grade. Robosorter sorts on the basis of a plan view of each item arriving on a conveyor belt. After an item is assigned to a particular non‐reject grade Robosorter’s computer informs the appropriate air jet to turn on and off at appropriate times so that the item will be blown off its conveyor as it passes by the air jet. Robosorter also gathers information about sorting assignments and monitors it’s own performance, shutting down automatically if a hardware fault is detected.
