Abstract

Offers the view that if you react in the wrong way when a pupil approaches you for help, you may lose a valuable chance to offer support. Gives examples of problems where listening skills are needed. Discusses what is needed to become a good listener. Asserts it is vital to listen fully, to provide reassurance and empathy, although suggests consultation with others may be necessary to determine the most appropriate response. Considers that listening can give positive support and encouragement – a precious gift.
