Steeling itself for change

Abstract

Reports on the attempts of one of India′s largest public sector companies to initiate a TQM programme to enable it to become competitive, both at home and abroad. Outlines the background of the company and its efforts towards internal development. Asserts that expansion plans of the private sector steel industry have already cast their shadow on the Steel Authority of India Ltd. Emphasizes the need for TQM awareness. Describes steps taken as a pre‐cursor to launching the TQM programme and looks at the initial successes and problems. Supports the need to keep moving ahead, a message which the company has taken in well.
