Abstract

Discusses the efforts of Florida Power & Light to become the first non‐Japanese company to win the Deming Prize. Asserts the key components to the culture change were policy deployment, quality in daily work, and team activity. Contends that the quality improvement process provided those tools. Describes the first step towards quality improvement and the development of four quality principles. Discusses the components of the process. Stresses the importance of clear leadership with involvement and commitment by the CEO and top executives. Concludes, as a result of the Deming Prize, the company was quickly placed on the map as a model company, which others could study for advice on how to enhance quality efforts.
