Describes a case study at Australian Paper Manufacturers (APM), where several changes in systems and practices led to efficiency improvements. The problem faced was the need for improved systems of recording stock whereabouts, assembling outgoing loads, and disassembling incoming loads. The option chosen to improve the stock management system at APM′s Northgate distribution centre was bin management, which allowed physical segregation and labelling of loads. Describes the APM experience in detail, and includes diagrams and figures explaining both the physical layout of the distribution centre, and the system approach used.
