Discusses the use of an expert system‐based package, LOCAM, by four component manufacturers to bring together widely distributed expert knowledge. Examines the decision‐making facilities of LOCAM, and the way in which the integration of functions can result in a competitive edge in terms of lead time for manufacturers supplying a wide variety of similar products. Surmises that integration to the company′s MRP system enables integration of the whole production process, as well as other commercial decisions.
