Abstract

Discusses the need for improving maintenance practices in order to increase profits, with reference to the Japanese concept of total productive maintenance. Considers that plant reliability is essential to attain the full benefits of automated production methods, yet many Western companies understand the need to automate without accepting the need to maintain. Proposes a seven step plan to autonomous maintenance, focusing on cleaning, inspection, and orderliness.
