Erratum

It has come to the attention of Emerald Group Publishing that Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology, Vol. 85 No. 6, 2013, did not contain a Guest editorial. This occurred due to an error in the production process. Emerald sincerely apologises to the Editors and the readers for this inconvenience. This has been corrected in the online version of the issue.

This issue of Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology is directly linked to the 7th International Conference, “Supply on the Wings”, which was embedded in the International Aerospace Supply Fair AIRTEC held in Frankfurt, Germany on 6-8 November 2012 (http://www.airtec.aero). It is the first of two planned journal publications devoted to presenting a select array of technical articles derived from the 2012 Supply on the Wings conference.

The conference covered scientific and industrial presentations, connecting practice and science by more than 80 speakers from 20 nations. The program covered the following timely topics on emerging technologies for aerospace:

Composite and metallic structures/manufacturing/production.

Improved simulation.

Non-destructive inspection and structural health monitoring.

Engines and alternative fuels.

Systems and components.

Aerospace supply chain.

Aircraft design and certification.

The highlights were 15 keynote presentations from: Boeing, Airbus, Premium Aerotec, the European Commission, German Aerospace Center (DLR), HITCO Carbon Composites Inc., Fokker Aerostructures, PaR Systems, SGL The Carbon Company, Embraer, MAG Composites, Denel Aerostructures, Structural Composites and Web Industries. Another highlight was the Global Aerospace Supply Chain Management and Procurement Summit which focused on current and future challenges for the aerospace supply chain.

The yearly conference “Supply on the Wings” is an ideal meeting place for professionals from the area of development, engineering, project management, business administration, production, manufacturing, procurement and related fields. Especially, the inclusion of the conference in the AIRTEC exhibition allows excellent discussions between science and industry.

The proceedings of all conference presentations are publically available under ISBN 978-3-942939-05-8.

The following eight conference papers have been selected for publication in this peer-reviewed special issue:

Majka, A.R., “Take-off aided by magnetic levitation technology”.

Ikiades, A.A., Spasopoulos, D., Amoiropoulos, K., Richards, T., Howard, G., Pfeil, M., “Detection and rate of growth of ice on aerodynamic surfaces using its optical characteristics”.

Budzik, G., Kozik, B., Pacana, J., “Defining influence of load conditions on distribution and value of stresses in dual-power-path gear wheels applying FEM”.

Wygonik, P., “Engine and multi-task airplane integration: criteria of engine parameters selection”.

Sobolewski, B., Marciniec, A., “Method of spiral bevel gear tooth contact analysis performed in CAD environment”.

Rydlo, K., Rzucidlo, P., Chudy, P., “Simulation and prototyping of FCS for sport aircraft”.

Drozdowski, K., Tofil, A, Gontarz, A., Pater, Z., Tomczak, J., “Manufacturing process of plane rim from aluminium alloy”.

Turtur, C.W., “The zero point energy of the quantum-vacuum”.

The articles deal with different solutions for future aerospace challenges in the areas of take-off assisting systems, ice detection systems, improved simulation of of gear wheels and sport aircrafts, new engine selection criteria, improved manufacturing processes and an alternative energy concept.

With great pleasure we would like to thank all authors for writing such excellent technical papers. Further, the reviewers deserve praise and appreciation for their insightful critique and suggestions, which contributed directly to improve the technical content of this Special Issue. Finally, we would like to thank the Editor-in-Chief of the Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology Journal, Dr Askin T. Isikveren, for his agreement and support in making this issue possible.
