Inertia Engineering’s advanced anti-corrosion technology enhances switchgear performance

Article Type: Methods From: Anti-Corrosion Methods and Materials, Volume 62, Issue 3

Inertia Engineering, a leading manufacturer of medium and high-voltage electrical distribution, transmission and automated outdoor overhead switchgear, announces the addition of thermal diffusion galvanization (TDG) to the performance and reliability-enhancing features of its industry-leading LineBOSS™ Unitized Sidebreak Line Switch series. TDG is a significant advancement over conventional hot-dip galvanizing. It uses a method of applying a uniform, sacrificial zinc–iron alloy utilizing a metallurgical vapor diffusion process tested to ASTM 1059 and has been approved by the US Department of the Navy for salt corrosion protection. As a “green” technology, TDG substantially outperforms conventional mild steel protection, without the environmental impacts of other processes. Applying the TDG process to critical ferrous components provides corrosion protection unmatched by any other outdoor switchgear.

“Inertia Engineering has partnered with Kortick manufacturing to produce the first highly corrosion-resistant, TDG-protected switchgear in the industry”, says Dean Sanders, Inertia’s founder and CEO:

Adding TDG is an important milestone in reducing the cost of ownership and improving switchgear reliability. This is one of the many innovative advances engineered into Inertia’s robust-yet-elegant LineBOSS™ outdoor switchgear and switch automation products.

Inertia Engineering LineBOSS Sidebreak Switches feature sealed stainless steel roller bearings, silver-plated C110 copper current-carrying components and reverse loop contact jaws. They also use a variety of innovative arc-interrupting techniques. This combination of features assures smooth and dependable operation over a long life – even in environments where ice, dust, humidity, industrial corrosives and other contaminants are present. The unitized switches are fully factory assembled, simplifying installation while minimizing cost.

LineBOSS Unitized Sidebreak Line Switches are A.N.S.I. and I.E.C. rated and are offered in five voltage classes: 15.5, 25.8, 38.0, 48 and 72.5 kV. With continuous current ratings of 600, 900 and 1,200 amps, they are available in wide range of options and configurations engineered to customer-specific construction and operational needs.
