About the Contributors

F. Scott Bentley is an Assistant Professor in the School of Management at Binghamton University. He received his PhD from Rutgers University. His research focuses on how organizations achieve competitive advantage through the effective management of human resources (HR). In this vein, he has focused on the role of organizations’ HR investments in supporting both strategic change and financial performance. He also conducts research in the area of strategic human capital, with much of his work in this area focused on star employees. His research has been published in several outlets, including the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Personnel Psychology.

Ingmar Björkman is a Professor of International Business at Aalto University School of Business in Finland, where he served as Dean during 2012–2019. He is also adjunct professor at BI Norwegian Business School and incoming rector at Hanken School of Economics. His research interests focus on people management issues in international organizations. He has published his research in journals like the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Organisation Studies, Journal of World Business, Human Resource Management, and Human Resource Management Journal. His latest book is Global Challenge: Managing People Across Borders (4th ed., forthcoming 2022), co-authored with Vladimir Pucik, Paul Evans, and Günter Stahl. He is a winner of the Journal of International Business Studies Decade Award (together with Dana Minbaeva, Torben Pedersen, Carl Fey, and H.-J. Park). He has received best/outstanding teacher awards in three different business schools. He received the International Educator (Dean) of the Year Award from the Academy of International Business (AIB) in 2019 and the EIASM Interdisciplinary Leader Award in 2021.

Matthew L. Call received his PhD from the University of South Carolina (2016) and is currently an Assistant Professor of Management at Texas A&M University. His research seeks to understand the link between individual and organizational performance, and how organizations can appropriate value from an increasingly mobile workforce, with particular interest in star employees. His work has been published in the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Personnel Psychology.

Wayne F. Cascio is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources, the Academy of Management, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, the American Psychological Association, and the Australian Human Resources Institute. Currently, he serves as a consulting editor of the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS), having served as an Area Editor from 2016 to 2019. From 2007 to 2014, he served as a Senior Editor of the Journal of World Business. He has published more than 200 articles and book chapters, and 33 books, including Managing Human Resources: Productivity, Quality of Work Life, Profits (12th ed., 2022), Investing in People (with John Boudreau and Alexis Fink, 3rd ed., 2019), and Applied Psychology in Talent Management (with Herman Aguinis, 8th ed., 2019).

David G. Collings is a Professor of Human Resource Management Dublin City University. He previously held faculty positions at the University of Sheffield and National University of Ireland, Galway, and visiting positions at King’s College London, Nanyang Business School, and Cornell University as a Fulbright Scholar. He is an Elected Member of the Royal Irish Academy, and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. He has published on topics related to staffing, mobility, and talent in outlets including Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Management, and Organizational Science. He is an Associate Editor at Academy of Management Perspectives, former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of World Business and Human Resource Management Journal, and sits on the Editorial Boards of journals including Academy of Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, and Journal of Management. He is Chair of the HR Division of the Academy of Management.

Nicky Dries is a Full Professor of Organizational Behavior at KU Leuven and BI Norwegian Business School. Her research interests are careers, talent management, and the future of work. She was an Associate Editor at Applied Psychology until 2019 and has been on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of World Business, and European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology. Since 2016, she has been featured on AcademiaNet, the European database of leading women in science. In 2019, she was listed as one of the world’s top 100,000 scientists (cf. Ioannidis, PLoS Biology). In 2021, she was selected for Belgium’s inaugural “40 under 40” cohort, a think tank for the nation’s most promising young societal leaders. She has been an active member of the two largest cross-cultural projects in career studies, that is, the Career Adaptability/Life Design project (2008–2013) and 5C (Consortium for the Cross-Cultural Study of Contemporary Careers; 2011–ongoing).

Elaine Farndale is a Professor of Human Resource Management and Director of the School of Labor and Employment Relations, Pennsylvania State University (USA), where she is also the Founder and Director of the Center for International Human Resource Studies. Her research and teaching encompass the broad fields of international human resource management (HRM), strategic HRM, and HRM and performance. She has published widely from her international collaborations in leading journals such as Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Human Resource Management, and Human Resource Management Journal, as well as publishing four books. She has also served as Co-Editor-in-Chief for Human Resource Management Journal, Co-editor for Routledge’s Global HRM Series, Associate Editor for Human Resource Management and International Journal of Human Resource Management, as well as serving on other editorial boards. She completed her PhD at Cranfield School of Management (UK) and worked previously as a human resource specialist for several years.

Marion Festing (PhD) is a Professor of Human Resource Management and Intercultural Leadership at ESCP Business School. She has contributed to ESCP’s development in recent years as the Rector/Dean of the Berlin campus, the European Associate Dean for Research and the holder of the Renault Chair of Intercultural Management. She has founded ESCP’s Talent Management Institute and the Excellence Centre for Intercultural Management, Diversity and Inclusion, which both link academic and practitioner communities. These topics also reflect her research interests, which include international human resource management (HRM), diversity and inclusion, talent management, and new work in various institutional and cultural contexts. She has published in journals such as Human Resource Management, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Review, Academy of Management Perspectives, or Journal of World Business. She also serves as the Chairperson of the Human Resources Committee of the Association of University Professors of Business Administration in German-speaking countries.

Eva Gallardo-Gallardo is an Associate Professor at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya·BarcelonaTech (UPC) in Spain. She previously held academic appointments at five Catalan universities and visiting appointments at Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch universities. She is the Coordinator and Co-founder of the TechTalent-Lab at the UPC. Her research focuses on talent management (TM), with a particular interest in understanding the formation and evolution of the field, its dynamics, and conceptual boundaries. Her work, published in leading international outlets, has been influential, attracting high citations. She received the five-year Scholarly Impact Award (2018) from the Human Resource Management Review, and Emerald Literati Awards for Citations of Excellence (2016). She has (co-)authored several book chapters and a book on TM. She has served on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Human Resource Management (2016–2018) and is a Member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Organizational Effectiveness: People and Performance.

Tomi J. Kallio is a Professor of Business Development at University of Vaasa in the University Consortium Chydenius in Kokkola, Finland. He is also an Affiliated Professor at Linnaeus University (Sweden). He holds PhDs in Administrative Science (University of Tampere) and in Business Economics (Turku School of Economics) and has extensive interdisciplinary work experience. He has received several awards for education and research. He is particularly interested in management of knowledge-intensive organizations and knowledge workers. He has conducted longitudinal research on the development of performance management and measurement in Finnish universities for more than a decade. His other research interests include organizational theory, organizational creativity, remote work, and research methodology. He has published in journals such as International Journal of Management Reviews, Human Relations, Studies in Higher Education, Journal of Business Ethics, International Journal of Operations and Production Management, and Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal.

Rebecca R. Kehoe is an Associate Professor of Human Resource Studies in the ILR School at Cornell University. Her scholarship examines the interplay of human capital with the broader social and organizational contexts in which it is developed and employed. Her recent areas of focus have included star performers, alignment of human resource (HR) systems and business strategy, and process-based perspectives of HR system design and implementation. Her research has appeared in Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Management, Personnel Psychology, and ILR Review.

Lynn Schäfer (PhD) is an Affiliated Researcher with the Talent Management Institute at ESCP Business School Berlin and Head of People & Culture with homee, a smart home, internet of things (IoT), and renewable energy provider in Germany. As former head of the Talent Management Institute at ESCP Business School, her research interests and research projects have focused on talent management in Germany, gender inclusion and diversity, generational aspects, new ways of working and small- and medium-sized businesses. She has published in journals such as International Human Resource Management and Journal of World Business and wrote several book chapters on talent management and practitioner-oriented articles for German human resource (HR) practitioner magazines.

Hugh Scullion is a Professor in International HRM at Hull University. His international research reputation in international human resource management (HRM) and global talent management is evidenced by publications in leading journals (e.g., the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of World Business, and Human Resource Management Journal), publication of leading books in the field, and over 11,000 citations reflecting the influence of his work. He is an Editorial Board Member of six leading journals and is known for developing strong research collaboration with leading institutes in India (Indian Institute of Management) and the CEE supported by research grants from the Global Challenges Research Fund. He is a Co-chair of the EIASM Talent Management Workshop. He has consulted widely in Europe (e.g., Rolls Royce, Sun Microsoft, Boots) and in Asia (Telecom Malaysia and National Productivity Board of Singapore). He is the Chair of the Humberside HR Directors Group and Director of the Future of Global Work Institute at Hull University.

Adam Smale is a Professor of Management at the University of Vaasa, Finland. His research interests lie in human resource management, talent management, and careers in cross-national and multinational corporation settings. He has published his research in the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Human Resource Management Journal, and has co-authored a best-selling teaching case on global talent management (available via www.thecasecentre.org). He sits on the Editorial Board of Human Resource Management Journal and is a Member of several international research collaborations including GLOBE, 5C, and Cranet.

Marian Thunnissen works as a Professor at the School of HRM and Applied Psychology of Fontys University of Applied Sciences in Eindhoven (The Netherlands). She has over 20 years of experience in research, consulting, and teaching. Her current research is focused on the identification, attraction, and development of talent, in particular in the public sector. Her recent interests concern a “team-based” talent management (TM) approach, the role of the line manager in TM, and the dilemmas and tensions organizations experience in developing and implementing TM. She finds it very important to share her knowledge with organizations and human resource (HR) practitioners, in order to support them in an evidence-based TM approach. Her work is published in Human Resource Management Review, International Journal of HRM, Personnel Review, and Employee Relations. She has (co-)authored several book chapters on TM, for example, on TM in knowledge-intensive organizations, TM in the public sector, and TM in academia. She frequently reviews articles for academic journals such as Career Development International and Journal of Organizational Behavior. She is the Editor-in-Chief of the Dutch Journal of HRM.

Vlad Vaiman is a Professor and Associate Dean at the School of Management of California Lutheran University and a Visiting Professor at several premier universities around the globe. He has published five books on managing talent in organizations and at a country level, as well as a number of academic and practitioner-oriented articles and book chapters on talent management and international human resource management (HRM). His work appeared in Academy of Management Learning and Education, Human Resource Management, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of Business Ethics, and many others. He is also a Founding Editor and the Chief Editorial Consultant of the European Journal of International Management, and an Editorial Board Member of several academic journals, such as European Management Review, Human Resource Management Review, Journal of Global Mobility, among others. He is a Founder, Organizer, and a Leading Chair of the EIASM Workshop on Talent Management, as well as the Editor of the Emerald book series on Talent Management.

When I became the EIASM Executive Director, the Talent Management team – Prof. Vlad Vaiman, Prof. David Collings, and Prof. Hugh Scullion – was the first academic group I engaged with. And what an inspiring team of outstanding scholars they happened to be! This team has truly global scope and includes an impressive circle of leading academics with complementary talents who are dedicated to our community: together they are efficient, dynamic, and rigorous as well as warm and welcoming. Working with the Talent Management (TM) team has had a profound effect on me personally.

During the past decade, TM has been one of the fastest growing areas of research in human resources (HR), organizational behavior (OB), and business and management. The EIASM Workshop on TM was launched on April 16–17, 2012, when this theme first emerged, and when its significance was first recognized by the wider academic community. The objective of the workshop was “to create a forum for academic exchange of empirical qualitative or quantitative research in the area of talent management.” Since its inception, the goal was indeed to provide a greater depth in understanding of the role and importance of TM within organizations and to explore synergies between research and practical perspectives on contemporary TM. The original chairpersons, Prof. Vaiman, Prof. Collings, and Prof. Scullion, were the linchpins of the development of a community whose contributions to the academic area of TM can now be observed with respect. This excellent new book contributes very explicitly to the recognition of their accomplishment, and we are deeply grateful to these three individuals for their dedicated commitment and continuous dynamism.

EIASM’s mission is to foster and support high-quality impactful research and doctoral studies in management, governance, and related disciplines. The European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management has dedicated itself to raising the profile of European management research with respect to other established scientific disciplines, as well as the business world. For 50 years, EIASM has been the European network of networks for researchers and doctoral students in management and governance. The TM team continues to provide a strong contribution to academia as well as EIASM’s highly impactful service to the academic community at large.

Established in 1971, EIASM celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, and it is a great pleasure to observe the outcomes of the original Talent Management Workshop. Today, we can clearly see the results which include the rejuvenation and renewal of EIASM academic teams as well as the contributions of individual scholars, who are deeply committed to the shared mission of benefitting the entire academic community. As a topic, it bridges a number of core management areas, including human resource management, organizational psychology, strategy, and international business. The series features monographs and edited collections exploring both research and practical perspectives on contemporary TM. The main aim of the series is to provide a forum for the publication of novel perspectives on talent and TM from across disciplinary divides. It also provides the opportunity to explore new and innovative issues and topics in this area in greater depth.

This Emerald series, Talent Management, is intended to serve the growing market of global scholars and practitioners who seek a deeper and broader understanding of the role and importance of TM in organizations. The series focuses on key areas of TM practice as well as analyses at different levels from individual to societal. With this in mind, all books in the series provide a thorough review of existing research and multiple examples of companies around the world, wherever applicable. The launch of the EIASM Workshop on Talent Management in 2012 coincided with this surge in research interest, and thus this volume – appropriately titled Talent Management: A Decade of Developments – is a valuable record of the development of our understanding of TM at a critical time in its evolution. The workshops provide a dedicated forum for the foremost scholars and practitioners in the field and an outstanding generation of new scholars whose research is located in the talent space to come together to consider the key questions which the area faces. Building upon a decade of the EIASM Workshops on Talent Management, this volume brings together leading voices on TM to reflect on the current status of research in their respective areas of expertise. Their chapters summarize key developments in our understanding of TM over the past 10 years and highlight some priorities for research and practice moving forward.

It goes without saying that the publisher and editor are vital partners in making this series possible.
