About the Contributors

Florian Becker-Ritterspach is a Professor of Organization at the HTW Berlin (Faculty of Business and Law), Berlin/Germany. His international career included positions as a researcher at the German University in Cairo, the Social Science Research Centre, Berlin and the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. He received his PhD from the University of Groningen in the field of Management and Organization. Visiting appointments were among others with the German International University in Cairo, the University of Stuttgart and the Copenhagen Business School. His current research interest centers on multinational corporations, firm internationalization support, firm growth and emerging markets. He has published widely in renowned international academic journals including the British Journal of Management, International Business Review, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Journal of International Management, Management International Review and Organization Studies. In 2016, he co-edited the book Micropolitics in the Multinational Corporation – Foundations, Applications and New Directions (Cambridge University Press).

Christoph Dörrenbächer is a Professor of Organizational Design and Behavior in International Business at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (Faculty of Business and Economics), Berlin/Germany. Previously he worked as a Consultant and Research Fellow at various organizations in Germany and abroad, including the Social Science Research Centre, Berlin and the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. Visiting appointments were with the United Nations Centre on Transnational Corporations (New York), the Central European University (Budapest) and the Manchester Metropolitan University. He holds a PhD from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Free University, Berlin. His current research focus is on multinational corporations, critical management studies, structural change and firm growth. He has published widely in renowned international academic journals including the British Journal of Management, International Business Review, International Journal of Management Reviews, Organization Studies and the Journal of World Business. In 2017, he co-edited the book Organizational Identity and Firm Growth: Properties of Growth, Contextual Identities and Micro-level Processes” (Palgrave MacMillan).

Preetam Gaikwad is a first-year PhD candidate at the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Chair of Strategic and International Management. Previously, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from India. She has over 10 years of experience as a design and project engineer in the construction and mining industry. She received a Master’s degree in Business Administration in International Management from Berlin. Her research focus is high growth firms, innovation and entrepreneurship.

Anna-Luisa Grebe is a student of the EPAS accredited BA program “International Business Management” at the Berlin School for Economics and Law. For two years, she has worked as a student assistant. Her current research focuses on social impact strategies and sustainability activities. Further, she has been involved in the creation of the project “PlasticWide” at Enactus Berlin to build a circular economy model in international cooperation with Enactus Kenya.

Miriam Hamam is a former student at and holds a Master’s degree in International Business and Consulting (Strategy track) from the Berlin School of Economics and Law (Faculty of Business and Economics). Currently, she works in Business development for a company within the mobility sector, where she is responsible for market openings and developments. She has gained extensive experience in the mobility sector and was involved in various innovation projects during her professional career, which sparked her interest in startup organizations and leadership structures.

Christian Raffer is a Senior Economist at the German Institute of Urban Studies (Deutsches Institut für Urbanistik/Difu). Previously he worked as a Research Associate for Hertie School, Berlin, and as a Lecturer for Micro- and Macroeconomics. He studied Economics at the Berlin School of Economics and Law and at the Humboldt University, Berlin. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in Public Economics at the Free University of Berlin. His main research interest lies in local government studies with a special focus on local government finances. From 2018 to 2020, he has co-edited two books: Local Public Finance in Europe (Bertelsmann Foundation) and Local Public Finance. An International Comparative Regulatory Perspective (Springer International Publishing). In another strand of research, he focuses on firm growth in Germany. He has published several articles in edited volumes and academic journals in which he analyzed gazelle growth.

Julia Thielemann is a Research Assistant at the Berlin School of Economics and Law (Faculty of Business and Economics). Previously she worked in different consultancies including the global strategy boutique CVA and KPMG. Further, she was active in student consultancy projects as part of and alongside her studies at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. She holds a Master’s degree in Management from the Rennes School of Business in Rennes (France) as well as a Master’s degree in International Business and Consulting (Strategy track) from the Berlin School of Economics and Law.

Matthias Tomenendal is a Professor of Management and Consulting at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. He acts as the Director of the Berlin Professional School. Previously he worked as a Strategy Consultant at Boston Consulting Group. He holds a Doctorate in Economic Science from the University of Saarland and an MBA from the University of Georgia (USA). His current research focuses on firm growth, organizational identity, as well as management consulting. He consults national and international clients on issues of management and leadership. He has published in renowned international academic journals including Industry and Innovation, Competition and Change and Critical Perspectives on International Business. He has published several chapters and articles on “gazelles” in German publication outlets. In 2017, he co-edited the book Organizational Identity and Firm Growth: Properties of Growth, Contextual Identities and Micro-level Processes (Palgrave MacMillan).
