Conceiving, writing and illustrating this book was something of a solitary pastime, returned to in fits and starts over the course of a good number of years. But I am indebted to a number of individuals and organizations for their valuable contributions during its gestation and publication. Frank Sparkman, AIA made initial suggestions for inquiries as to potential publishers. Professor Mark DeKay saw potential in my efforts and sent information and comments to his own publishers, ultimately resulting in this book. I had taken the perhaps unusual step of commissioning a formatted version of the complete proposed book, and Michael Richards and his forces at Richards Design Group produced that product with patience and sensitivity. Peer reviewers Dean Emeritus William Rudd, FAIA, Professor Marleen Davis, FAIA, Gene Burr, AIA AICP, and others unknown to me offered insightful comments that were greatly appreciated.

Earlier versions or excerpts received very useful feedback from Jon Coddington, T. K. Davis, Randy Ott, and others. My deep thanks to the team at Emerald for shepherding through my first book-length endeavor. My colleagues at BullockSmith Architecture & Planning encouraged my efforts, and turned a blind eye to some extensive photocopier use. My daughter, Alison E. Moffett, a London artist and educator, offered valuable suggestions and support, and my wife Cindy Robinson Moffett, a writer and editor, was ideally suited to offer patient advice and informed counsel. The career of my late first wife, Dr. Marian Scott Moffett, a remarkably productive educator, architectural historian, and author, inspired me to believe that bringing this book to completion was a worthy and achievable goal.
