Abstract

ATM is the coming network technology. We keep being told so – by suppliers of ATM equipment! It is true that ATM offers the potential of huge bandwidth but the question is Is now the time to change? After all, the ATM standards have not all been ratified and all suppliers have an element of proprietary technology in their kit. Thus asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) is an emerging rather than an existing technology. It would be useful to see some ATM networks in use, not just on paper. Well, now not only is the technology emerging, but applications too.
