AB  - Purpose–To examine the survivability, in France, of what may be one of the world's oldest state planning bodies.Design/methodology/approach–This is a straightforward account of what is happening to centralized planning in a democratic state.Findings–France's current government found the agency unneeded.Practical implications–If the State Planning Agency in Paris is eliminated, France will have no centralized office for strategic planning.Originality/value–The chronicle records the abolition of an entity recognized by government during the previous 60 years as being essential to its functioning.
