Abstract

The article reviews briefly the main factors behind the development of new DSPD services. Weaknesses in the design of the services are pointed out, and the article outlines the characteristics of patients and institutions that should be considered carefully if intentions are to be realised. It concludes by suggesting that the long‐term future of DSPD may depend on its perceived cost‐effectiveness compared with that of other services.
