Abstract

This paper highlights the levels of poor basic education in the general population and the additional difficulties faced by patients with severe and enduring mental illness. For some years concern has been expressed regarding lack of provision of education in the mental health sector and, despite successive governments' acceptance of the Reed Committee's (Reed, 1991) recommendations, little provision has materialised. The paper points out the opportunity for education in medium secure units and describes the work of the education department in an independent medium secure psychiatric hospital.Further research is needed to evaluate the contribution of education departments in the rehabilitation of people with chronic mental illness.
