This article employs a holistic overview of the existing specialist literature in an attempt to define, clarify and discriminate between the important aspects of the ongoing electronic revolution (ER). Based upon a critical review of empirically rigorous publications, it aims to identify and explore the fundamental aspects of e‐commerce and e‐business. It also proposes a tentative framework for a critical research agenda in e‐entrepreneurship and small e‐business development.
