Abstract

It is estimated that between 28 and 30 million immigrants live in the USA, slightly more than 10 percent of the total population. Of these, 90 percent are of working age (New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health). It has been argued that lack of literacy among immigrant workers is to blame for instances of high turnover and low productivity, but most training programs developed to combat the situation simply fail to inspire workers to learn.
