KIDSPHERE

Robert D. Carlitz (Professor of Physics at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA 15260. E‐mail: rdc@ckp.edu. His research specialty is the theory of elementary particles and their interactions, with a specific emphasis on the strong interactions – quarks and gluons. Physicists have been regular users of the Internet since its inception, and the author took an early interest in the application of wide area networks to K‐12 education. In addition to moderating the KIDSPHERE mailing list, he is the architect of the school networking testbed Common Knowledge: Pittsburgh and has served on the Board of Directors of the Consortium for School Networking.)

Abstract

The KIDSPHERE mailing list is an online service which was created to further the development of school networking. The growth of this service has paralleled the rapid rise in the use of the Internet by students and teachers in schools around the world. Describes the history of KIDSPHERE, how the service is used, and what value it provides to its subscribers. Services of this type play an important role in building a community of educators on the Internet and in furthering the goals of educational reform.
