This is an exploratory paper.

Findings

This paper explores ways in which reference services can be proactive in their approach to rapidly changing patron expectations in the information age.

Practical implications

Reference services are commonly the first point of entry for patrons seeking appropriate resources for their research and study. The information age is revolutionary in many ways, and presents a landscape in constant flux to the library professional. This paper suggests ways in which reference departments cannot only survive, but also thrive, in this volatile culture.

Originality/value

This paper hopefully makes useful recommendations, mainly at the theoretical level, for library reference services to be proactive and thrive in the rapidly changing information age.
