Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the challenges presented by the global economic crisis.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper focuses on effects as they pertain to the author's institution as well as the larger library community.

Findings

The paper suggests libraries and library associations must develop new ways of performing business.

Originality/value

The paper describes an initiative of the International Coalition of Library Consortia to work with publishers to contain costs, placing in context the challenges noted above.
