Abstract
Purpose
This article seeks to describe the evolution of key technologies that have improved the research process.
Design/methodology/approach
The article is an opinion piece that reflects on some technological advances to the information world since 1999, and makes judgments about the future role of academic libraries in light of these new technologies.
Findings
The article finds that libraries need to become comfortable with the commercial entities that provide access to information. Libraries should focus on the value‐added services unique to their profession.
Originality/value
The article should encourage thoughts and discussion on a topic of interest to most libraries.
