Abstract

Continuing professional education (CPE) refers to the ongoing, structured and unstructured learning and educational opportunities that are pursued by particular professional groups and their members. This paper argues that CPE needs to discard its traditional, conservative mantle and assume a new agenda more consistent with the emancipatory and transformative imperatives associated with the learning organization. To guide this development, a set of philosophical principles is provided and these are grounded in the work of two theorists, Paulo Freire and Antonio Gramsci. It is suggested that this more radical approach to CPE within the learning organization will encourage less adherence to domesticating and passive modes of CPE.
