Broadening horizons and gaining experiences ‐ Anglo‐German co‐operation in librarianship
Abstract
Analyses the importance of international co‐operation in librarianship and describes the role of the British Council in this field. Reports that successful international co‐operation is based on an understanding of the other culture and how the culture influences working life and that this understanding can be acquired by exposing oneself for some time to the other culture, for example during an extended work exchange. Explains that the British Council in Germany has developed a number of activities like work exchange programmes, seminars, English for librarians courses, and study tours to initiate and support international co‐operation. Suggests that international experience is required by many employers, also in libraries and that participation in international activities is therefore an important contribution to the professional development of the librarian.
