Abstract

Outlines the possibility and desirability of LIS practitioners undertaking research for a doctorate (PhD) as a career development route. Explores the likelihood of a Doctorate in Library Studies (DLS) being offered by British library schools, together with the opportunities offered in business schools. Outlines the nature of the doctorate and some problems library practitioners might encounter as doctoral candidates.
