TY - JOUR AB - Purpose–This paper aims to examine policies on employee engagement, work‐life balance, equal opportunities and internal communications that have proved successful at DIY retailer B&Q.Design/methodology/approach–The paper lists the company's principal initiatives in these areas and demonstrates how they contribute to profitability.Findings–The paper shows how B&Q's policies in areas such as gender equality and the employment of older workers link to overall company strategy.Practical implications–The paper explains how B&Q has translated its company values into a set of practical policies that affect employee behavior and, through this, customer satisfaction.Originality/value–The paper highlights the ways in which respecting diversity is vital to the organization's success.
