Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to describe the impact of a series of bomb explosions (Ikeja Ammunition Transfer Depot, Lagos, Nigeria) on the environment, health and psychology of the local communities.

Design/methodology/approach

Information was collected from reports in local newspapers, records and in‐depth interviews with residents and opinion leaders – affected sites were visited.

Findings

Finds that there was a lack of preparedness in dealing with each phase of the clean‐up operation: relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction.

Originality/value

Makes suggestions for incorporating a proper curriculum for emergency preparedness, mitigation and response strategies.
