TY - JOUR AB - Analysis of the organisational structures utilised toconduct international purchasing activities wasundertaken at 24 multinational corporations. Themajority of the corporations studiedhad decentralised purchasing organisations and all hadcorporate purchasing staffs. Four basic approacheswere found: (1) totally decentralised; (2) co‐ordinated;(3) totally centralised; and (4) separateinternational purchasing group. Within this overallframework there were several forms of staffassistance to assist operating units effectivelyaccomplish their international purchasing goals. Thisassistance included foreign buying offices, tradingcompanies and international staff specialists. Therewas also a common philosophy which indicated thenecessity of worldwide sourcing.
