Abstract

This paper discusses the concepts of static and dynamic quality enunciated by Robert Pirsig in relation to concepts of variation and statistical control enunciated by W. Edwards Deming. The relationship between static and dynamic is seen to reflect a fundamental truth present in many systems, and is posited to lead to approaches to foster innovation and dynamic change. Three dimensions for addressing dynamic change concern operational processes, organizations and the environment. Along all three dimensions, the challenge for organizations is how to foster, recognize and manage the variation necessary for dynamic change. Approaches are discussed for doing this and conclusions are presented.
