Abstract
Based on a study of the management requirements and challenges of the position of district magistrates in India. Determines what makes district magistrates effective. The study was based on interviews and workshops involving dozens of district magistrates. Illustrates that even the most impossible and complex management jobs can be done effectively if district magistrates have the skills and experience to carry out some key functions and roles.
