TY - JOUR AB - Previous research has indicated that the work environment in schools is not conducive to management learning development particularly in the case of middle managers such as heads of departments. Reports further detailed research involving middle managers in 49 secondary schools in the Midlands and North West of the UK. The research instrument used is the learning organization questionnaire, and the analysis highlights particular weaknesses in the organizational structure and climate in schools in relation to management learning. Indicators are given for planned and managed development activities in schools which could help to overcome the reported problems of middle managers.
