Abstract
Considers the idea of continuous monitoring, discussing some of the issues involved in the process. While identifying some of the difficulties involved one possible approach is discussed for managing continuous monitoring in the classroom context. A recording sheet is presented as an illustration of how this particular approach might be used. The discussion centres on how a profile of a child′s academic achievement in English, Mathematics and Science is built up over a one‐year period. Emphasis is placed on a simple, meaningful and useful method of recording, one which reduces pressure on the teacher and the pupil. The professional judgement of the teacher is recognized in positively assessing a child′s progress based on clear, realistic goals.
