Abstract

Purpose

Through an examination of the admission department at Miami University of Ohio and their use of information technology, a generalized framework for the use of information technology in university admissions is proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper was developed to start an introduction to the admission process and the role of information technology in the process. The basis for the case study was then developed by introducing Miami University and the background of its admission department regarding the implementation of information technology at the University. In addition, the information system development and evolution were examined, displayed, and evaluated while also analyzing the specific parts of the system, allowing for the basis of a proposed framework. Finally, the proposed general framework for the use of information technology in the higher education admission process was analyzed and constructed.

Findings

It was found that provision of a system that offers the department the best opportunity for success in communicating with prospects, applicants, acceptances, and confirmations is necessary.

Research limitations/implications

Statistical analysis and models, marketing concepts, and numerous other techniques may be added to this framework to enhance the entire system.

Practical implications

The framework sets the stage and proffers a basic structure that is capable of adapting to the specific environs of each unique admission department while continuously providing enhanced information. The ideal goal is to improve the strategies and goals of the university while simultaneously improving the processes within the admission department. To obtain even a slight improvement should justify the implementation of this framework but, utilized correctly and with effective support, this system should offer endless opportunities.

Originality/value

Through a case study of the admission department at Miami University, a framework for utilizing information technology within a higher education admission department offers an examination of the application of information technology to generate improved quality.
