Abstract

Describes how outsourcing cataloging functions in public libraries enhanced the availability of materials, control costs, and helped to meet deadlines. In the state of South Carolina, ten public library systems have used outsourcing cataloging functions for the following reasons: opening day collections, cost effectiveness, removal of backlog, improve staff efficiency, shelf ready books, and personal issues. The survey provides the names of vendors who performed the cataloging functions. The research provides a discussion on outsourcing cataloging functions in public libraries and provides an outsourcing survey.
