The future of journal publishing

Abstract

Many publishers have traditionally depended on journals. The explosion in information is making it impossible for library funding to keep up; this is exacerbated as falling circulations and rising editorial costs cause further price increases. Emphasizes that publishers have to consider solutions if they are to remain in business. Individual article supply is one option; publishers would prefer to supply the articles themselves, but need central databases from which users can select. Electronic media speed up the process, improve the usability of articles, and make possible inclusion of new types of information. Workable charging systems will soon be available; security issues are also being addressed. Concludes that the journal entity still has a value in gathering together related articles and making them navigable.
