Abstract

Purpose

The meeting on the international interlibrary loan communication standard meeting in Washington DC under the auspices of the Association of Research Libraries is described.

Design/methodology/approach

The article is based on comments and opinions regarding the failure of a good standard development process.

Findings

The difficulties of arriving at a consensus are identified and an analysis of the wider context of document delivery is suggested as a possible way forward.

Originality/value

This review is a useful source of information for librarians and others interested in good standard development.
