Abstract

The first of a series of articles, outlines how the urban landscape evolved. Attempts to untangle the welter of legal controls through which the small‐scale urban landscape is currently protected, including: listed features; features not within the curtilage of listed buildings; conservation area controls; and scheduled ancient monuments and archaeological areas.
