Abstract

Purpose

This article aims to review the latest management developments across the globe and pinpoint practical implications from cutting‐edge research and case studies.

Design/methodology/approach

The briefing is prepared by an independent writer who adds their own impartial comments and places the articles in context.

Findings

The reputation of the Royal Bank of Scotland – one of the world's leading financial institutions – suffered catastrophically as a result of its ill‐judged acquisition of Dutch bank ABN AMRO and the wider implications of the global financial crisis. What had been seen as a stellar institution had to be baled out by the UK government, and its disgraced CEO, Sir Fred Goodwin, became the target of public outrage.

Practical implications

The article provides strategic insights and practical thinking that have influenced some of the world's leading organizations.

Originality/value

The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy‐to‐digest format.
