This paper aims to provide an overview of the current situation regarding ebooks in both academic and public libraries

The approach takes the form of a review of the literature, drawing together findings from various published ebook surveys conducted over the past three years

It was found that there is a need for libraries to raise awareness about the ebooks they offer and how they offer them.

Practical implications

The paper points up the importance of librarians having accurate knowledge about their users' concerns, which can be complex over the spectrum of ebooks, in order to obtain the “best deal”.

The paper draws together viewpoints from academic libraries, public libraries and ebook suppliers.
