A must read for beginners in the libraries industry and/or librarians who need to refresh their knowledge on the Dewey Classification schema. Exercises are also included at the end of each chapter for users to test their understanding, and for the readers' convenience answers are provided at the end of the book.

The first three chapters give readers an introduction and an outline of the Dewey classification as well as defining frequently used terminologies and simple subjects. The following six chapters are dedicated to number building with standard subdivisions and other methods. The author also covers:

  • order preference when Dewey number is created for items belonging to different subject areas;

  • exceptions and options classifiers need to know when problems arises while classifying items that do not fit neatly into the usual structure; and

  • what is needed to be done for special and compound subjects.
