Abstract

The circumstances surrounding the foundation of the John Rylands Library, and the commercial and cultural context within which it was established are discussed. The background of John Rylands himself, and of his book collecting, is considered. The general nature of the collections at the Library’s opening is outlined. The relevance of the Library in modern times, and its secured future as part of the University of Manchester, is discussed.
