Abstract

Key developments over the past two decades, unstable 1970s, competitive 1980s, are traced as a basis for predicting developments into the 1990s. Stress is placed on the priority need for a competitive workforce comprising individual competence and organisational capability, with learning at the core. Pointers are given as to how a company can gain competitive advantage by learning faster than its competitors. In this respect the requirements of company environment and the task of educators are highlighted.
